SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of Southport citizens celebrated the release of the movie, Safe Haven, Thursday night.

300 tickets were sold to a special event at the Southport Community Center.

Safe Haven, which was released nationwide Thursday, was filmed in Southport last summer. It is based on a book written by Nicholas Sparks.

Many residents at the party watched the movie on Valentine's Day.

They said Southport is stunning on screen and there are a lot of aerials showing the beauty of the town.

The movie created a lot of buzz in Southport while filming was underway; the film includes a big parade scene in which hundreds of citizens appeared as extras.

There were some complaints though from citizens about filming, following five nights of fireworks that were set off for scenes in the flick.

Following Thursday night's party, the town's Board of Alderman met to discuss the town's film policy.

Alderman Buddy Barnes said he didn't think the town's filming guidelines should change at all.

"We want to encourage more filming here," he said. "We have a beautiful town. We have an atmosphere that movie companies like. That's why we live here."

However, he thought Thursday night would be a good opportunity to hear from citizens to see if changes need to be made.

He said Southport wants to continue to be accommodating to productions.
